New places keep popping up around Dublin's city centre, and barbecue restaurants popular in Brooklyn and London have become a recent favourite of Irish restaurateurs.Bison Bar was the first we can recall on the south quays, swiftly followed by Pitt Bros BBQ on George's St. However this new outpost in Smithfield is different - yes, the look is the same (think tin cans repurposed to hold cutlery, kitchen roll on the table and Amerciana-esque decor) but Dublin 7's newest restaurant has something that little bit different.It could be the fact that their meat smoker is authentic, all the way from Texas and transported to these here shores by ship. It could be the charming, kitsch decor that manages to have both a DIY vibe and an impressive finish at the same time (a rare feat). Or it could just be the fact that this is a neighbourhood joint reminiscent of small town America, and somehow doesn't feel contrived in urban Dublin.The food is standard BBQ fare, but done very well. Chicken, beef or pork in a box, burger or on a board. Sides of slaw, fries, mash (mixed with meat juice) and sausage. Craft beers and wine, and ice cream for dessert. The neutral wire needs to go to the threaded lamp shell and the hot to the bottom tab. It will light up wired either way, and when the switch is off you would be safe when changing the bulb. The "danger" of having them reversed comes when changing the bulb while the switch is still on. Granted most of us turn the switch off anyway, but still. If you have a meter that will test resistance or better still continuity, put one lead on the wire with the lettering and the other to the lamp shell. I am pretty sure it will "ring out", if not try the other wire. Once you have determined which is the neutral, wire it up. If you do not have a tester look and see if there is a cardboard tube around the socket that you can lift up and look at the wires. If not gently pry the top part of the socket loose from the bottom half in order to have a look. I am not sure why some fixtures come with wires the same color. Was it manufactured outside of the U.S.? Does it have a UL (Underwriters Lab) sticker on it anywhere?

Would the Empirical Behavior of a Simple Circuit Match My Model of It?
Yes, this would be a fair assessment of how the circuit is probably working.As a bit of an advisory, do not use the shower until you have traced the source of this!. It takes about 1mA for you to feel a tingling. Assuming it was dry when you were changing the light, then your resistance would be around 1-20kOhm in a damp environment (like a shower). This means you were experiencing a voltage around 1-20V. You claim you measured it at 1V. That means with dry skin, you have a resistance around 1000 Ohm. Wet skin significantly reduces this and you could find yourself with a resistance around 100 Ohm while taking a shower. That would put the current going through you at 10mA at least. This level of current can be extremely painful and potentially life-threatening if it crosses your heart.One common thing that isn't always taken into consideration is that with old houses, sometimes part of the plumbing is replaced with PVC or other non-conducting materials. This breaks the ground connection. You should check you plumbing. If you find something like this, create a current bridge and that should solve the problem. Also, watch for dim/flickering lights, appliances not acting properly, and outlets that don't work or don't work well. Any of these could indicate the source of the stray electricity.In the end, if you follow the pipes from the water main to your shower, you should find the problem. As a temporary fix, you could try connecting the shower head to a (insulated) ground line. Custom Theatrical Lighting Filter on the Cheap
I was recently asked about creating or finding a custom lighting effect for my church's Christmas Eve program. An outline of a crosswas to be projected on stage; I searched a bit on the web but was unable tofind instructions on making DIY filters. I had some ideas of my own and wantedto test them out.The filter is a low budget GOBO filter made from kitchen grade aluminum foil and securedwith kapton tape which is temperature rated for 500F/260C. This can be foundon-line or at some electronics stores.I did not start completely from scratch; I had a theatrical light fixture as we have about a dozen theatrical lights suspended for the stage. I was able to repurpose one for this effect.Removing the lens assembly, I was fortunate to find innerframe areas to mount onto. I measured the opening and determined a size for thefoil filter, 4" was chosen.The aluminum foil shape was cut with an X-Acto knife after placingit on a smooth scrap board. Other cutting techniques such as scarp-bookingstamps should work as well.Securing the filter within the fixture was quite simple. Asstated earlier there was a internal ring frame that I was able to affixto. Using only four pieces of tape ¼" inlength provided adequate security for the lightweight filter. Remember, thefilter MUST be mounted upside down as the image is inverted by the lenses. Alsothe fixture used had slide dampers to shape the light, these were used toreduce the amount of light getting to filter and provide more of a heat block.I slide in dampers till they just reached the outline of the filter with thefixture illuminated.The result was used to shine on an empty throne (chair) andthough it was only panned in for a minute at a key moment during a particularsong it had the desired effect. No color filter was added though that would of course be simple.The lighting bar in the church was mounted too close tostage to focus the light fixture by normal means of the lens screw in theprovided slot. There's a few options.If there's no grounding conductor at all, there's a few things you can do.Obviously, you could install a grounding conductor for the circuit.Code allows you to share a grounding conductor from another circuit, as long as the grounding conductor is properly sized.If you're replacing a fixture, you don't need a ground if the outlet is GFCI protected.410.44 Methods of Grounding. Luminaires and equipment shall be mechanically connected to an equipment grounding conductor as specified in 250.118 and sized in accordance with 250.122.Exception No. 3: Where no equipment grounding conductor exists at the outlet, replacement luminaires that are GFCI protected shall not be required to be connected to an equipment grounding conductor.At times, metallic boxes are grounded using metallic conduit, or the outer covering and/or internal bonding strip of armored cable. If this is the case, then the box may actually be grounded.There's also a chance that there's a grounding conductor stuffed in the back of the box.If the box is grounded, you can simply connect a grounding conductor to the box. If there's a grounding conductor stuffed in the box, you can simply connect to it• Related QuestionsDo light fixtures with small solar panels require direct sunlight?Solar panels receiving indirect sunlight Indirect sunlight produce around 10% to 25% of their optimal output. A solar panel of the size illustrated could optimally churn out around 4W with direct sunlight or 0.4W with indirect sunlight.The website for that light suggests it has a nominal wattage of 3W.So. If you had 12 hours of direct sunlight, you would easily get 12 hours of full luminance LED light. In this case the supply neutral feeds 1 side of the switch and I use the red wire as the switched hot and the black as the always hot for the outlet. If this is the case only 1 side of the outlet will have the connection tab broken, you can remove the red and cap it then jumper the hot to both sides of the outlet. At this point you can fish the wire to the switch box or the outlet for your light. The only problems I run into doing this is if fire breaks are in the wall then a long drill bit is required to punch a hole through the fire break. The second is insulation, insulation can be a pain in the back side, I use "glow rods or fish sticks" to feed down walls, these are 1/8" fiberglass rods I tape the wire to this helps get the wire down the wall to where it can be grabbed with a coat hanger. With 2 people this is easier but it can be done by 1 person it usually just takes longer unless you get lucky------How much can I safely plug into a light socket converted to a standard outlet? closedAnd I am concerned about the poor light socket. Most standard light sockets say something like100W maxThis refers to the lamp that you can safely use in that socket. The main variable that goes into that calculation, I believe, is the heat dissipation: most of the energy produced by an incandescent light bulb is in the form of heat, and the lamp fixturesocket has to be able to withstand the heat put out by the bulb.However, there are other factors, namely, the current rating the wires leading to the light socket and the electrical connections inside the socket itself. If the wires and connections are safe for under 1 Amp, then you can't use a larger than 100W bulb (given 120V AC). In the end you cannot know what part which factors play in the power rating of the socket, and so I would advise to find out the power rating of the light socket itself, and not exceed that either.Bottom line: the "Handy Hutlet" might allow 660W, but the light socket is unlikely to, and you'd be wise not to exceed the power rating of the weakest link in the chain------GFCI buzzing on same circuit as dimmerI have never encountered the situation of a buzzing GFI before. Sounds a bit fishy to me. The trouble shooting procedure would be to turn off the power to the bathroom, unscrew the GFI from the box, pull it out a bit and remove the "load" side wires which should go to the dimmer and check that "line" screws are tight. Turn the power back on, if the dimmer is on the load side then the light with dimmer should be inoperative. Does the sound go away? If it doesn't and the buzz remains, the GFI is probably defective. Now turn the power back off, put the load wires back on and test again. If the buzz comes back then replace the dimmer or swap it for a regular switch. If neither of these subtitution tests stop the problem, call a different electrician. Trust me, a buzz from a GFI or a dimmer is not a normal situation and could be a potentially dangerous situation. Feel free to ask follow up questions if any of this doesn't make sense to you. Maybe one of my buddies can do an edit to make this a bit easier to follow------remove single pole switch that control outletLeave the 3-way switch alone! Colors don't mean half as much as you'd like. Actually, they are there to distinguish wires in cable. Only ground has a reserved "color", though if present, neutral must be on white. The red wire is nothing but a pigtail, it could be purple for all it matters. People tend to make pigtails with any old bit of scrap they have lying around. Actually on this switch, both the screw and the backstab are in use, which is sloppy but it means the black backstabbed wire and the red pigtail are connected. So all of these are connected together: I would rend the wire out of that backstab and put it under the wire nut, as this will make the wiring easier to understand. And also because the backstab and screw method is bad, and also because backstabs are lousy in the first place. So now, the clump of blacks (and red pigtail) are almost certainly the supply hot coming into this box. Now it becomes clear: the solitary black wire on the switch is the switched-hot wire going to the receptacle. You can take it from here, I trust------How can this circle light cast a triangle shadow? closedWhile the bottom of the fixture (chandelier?) has circular symmetry, the top of it has this symmetry broken. Note that there are three support connections between the fixture and the ceiling, and that the edges of the bright triangle are roughly parallel with the lines between the three ceiling supports. Those smart switches require ground. It is not normal for devices to require ground for functional reasons, only safety reasons------Does a fluorescent light fixture use more energy than an incandescent?The fluorescent-start issue is not about energy. It's about tube life. Fluorescents are a type of "discharge light" meaning an electric arc runs down the length of a tube of vapor. Many lights are: the most obvious is neon, but also sodium, mercury and metal halide. To start the tube, the ballast must initially strike the arc. It does this with a spike of high voltage across the electrodes at both ends. They have a chemical coating. Normal operation wears the coating, but starts wear it a lot more. If your fluorescent fixture is frequently turned on-off, the tubes will fail sooner.
