Do you want to know about light? Here are some frequently asked questions.

1. How much energy is used by a light bulb in 2,190 hours?

1 watt = 1 joule per second So for a 60W light bulb, that's 60 joules per second 60W * 60 *60 * 2190 = 473040000J Typical kettle: 2KW 473040000J / (2000W * 60 * 60) = 65.7 Hours So, 60W bulb for 2190 hours = boiling a kettle for 65.7 Hours Another example: 750W microwave oven 473040000J / (750W * 60 * 60) = 175.2 Hours So, 60W bulb for 2190 hours = microwaving something for 175.2 Hours Since you posted in "green living", lets do an energy efficient light bulb equivalent (mine is 13W which is supposed to be as bright as a 60W incandescent bulb): 473040000J / (13W * 60 * 60) = 10107.9 Hours So, for the same amount of light (and energy) from (and used by) a 60W incandescent bulb switched on for 2190 hours, you could power an energy efficient bulb for 10107.9 hours. I did all of these calculations and was amazed when i saw that last result. I can see why they call them energy efficient!!! Almost 5 times more efficient. Hope that helps! It definitely opened my eyes! EDIT: In 2005, the price per KWh was about 6p in the UK if I remember correctly. So running the incadescent bulb for 2190 hours would have cost: 60W * 2190h = Approx. 131KWh >> so 131*6p = 786 pence The energy efficient bulb on the other hand, would have cost: (13W * 2190h) * 6p = 171 pence Much cheaper. Those energy efficient bulbs also last a lot longer (we are talking years longer!)

2. Christians, if God created light on the first day, why did he need to create the sun on the fourth?

God brought light (physical) into existence in 1:3 in order for the sun in verse 16 to shine it, and for the moon to reflect it. That is to say, the sun is a luminary, it shines light but it is not light itself. Your lamp in your room or house is not light, it just shines it....but it could not shine it if light did not exist (1:3). Mosheh

3. What happens if a super fast rotating ball accelerates near speed of light?

I remember wondering this exact same thing in high school. I did the math on it and figured that an infinitely thin bubble would take the shape of a peanut. The Lorentz Factor for 99,5% of C would shrink the equator to be 10cm in diameter, but if you look at the ball half way between the pole and the equator it will be traveling at 70% of the speed of light. The Lorentz factor at ,25m perpendicular to the pole will be ,71.Different properties of your sphere, depending on things such as elasticity, density, or maybe even if it's hollow inside would change how close of a peanut shape it can be. The more resistant your sphere is to being squeezed, the closer it will resemble a prolate ellipsoid, like in WhatRoughBeast's answer.

4. Why does light bend as it enters the eye?

Light, or white light, or monochromatic light is bent into 7 colors of the rainbow: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue Indigo, Violet (remember as ROY G BIV). Light that strikes a prism is refracted or bent into the mentioned colors. Colors of the rainbow are formed when light in the atmosphere strike raindrops that act as prisms. The human lens of the eyes and rods and cones in the retina produced colors we see. An Ophthalmologist is required to explain how our eye lens refract colors. I sold German and Swiss microscopes for 10 years, and then users of the microscope used drops of oils to place on a cover- slip so reflected light would focus on the oil that made images more precise. Microscopes have advanced so much that using oil to increase the resolution of an image is for teaching or for special applications. Refractive index(Index of Refraction)is a ratio between a control and the image. Water has a refracted index of 1.00(for reference)whereas glass has an index of about 1.30; close second is oil. If you wish to hide diamonds or glass objects, place them in water and the human naked eye can barely recognize them. A new bank building in Houston, Texas, where I live built glass door to enter the bank. I and other people kept bumping our heads on the glass doors because we could not notice in air how the glass fooled us. The human eye is most sensitive to wavelengths(colors) of yellow and green. I mentioned to a bank guard who frequently saw people bumping their heads on the glass doors to use a strip of yellow or green to cover the edges of the glass doors. I was really surprised when a week later, I received a nice letter from the president of the bank thanking me for the tip to use colored strips on the glass-door edges. harrald

I Bought a 30'' 130 Watt Odyssea Light Fixture with Cooling Fans and Moonlights. How Good Are These
Not sure about that brand but that is a lot of light if you are using it in freshwater. T5 bulbs??? You can use that for corals.LOL1. Did I wire my light fixture correctly? It sounds wrong to me, but I could not be sure without actually being there. You should connect the new fixture, in exactly the same way the original fixture was connected. If there was not a grounding conductor in the original circuit, replacing the fixture did not make one magically appear. If a grounding conductor is required, you will have to install one in accordance with local codes2. What does it mean if my light fixture causes light bulbs to blow frequently? This happens frequently in my 50 year-old home. I've measured the voltage to be 126V, which is high. I also notice lights getting brighter for a moment when the AC kicks in, which of course means even higher voltage. Constant higher voltage means shorter life, especially with the spikes. This has caused some of my home theater equipment to fail, even with the use of a "surge protector." The 130V bulbs sound like a good plan. For electronics, one of the best solutions are the Uninteruptable Power Supplies (UPS). They accept all kinds of wacky voltage - high and low, spikes and complete blackouts, and put out a constant 120V. They have batteries to provide the short term power during a blackout so you can shut down the computer without data loss, etc. There are voltage regulators (basically a huge UPS) available for the entire house, but those cost a fortune.3. Installing wall mount light fixture - what to do with ground wireI do not think you need to anything with the ground since you are plugging it in. If it was required for the plug then they should have given you a plug with a ground prong. You could cut off the ground wire, or tape it inside the fixture in case you ever decide to hardware it.4. How do i by pass the ballest on a 4' t8 Fluorescent light fixture to install led tubes? If it is a direct replacement using 120 vac or 220 vac do this. 1. Make sure the light has no power. 2. Remove covers. 3. Coming in to the fixture will be three wires (probably) Green is GROUND, leave that one alone. Black is power, disconnect it. White is neutral, disconnect it. 4. Disconnect the ballast (The big heavy box inside the fixture.) and remove it. If there is a starter (asually a little cylinder like object that you twist and remove.) remove that also. 5. Take the Black wire and hook it to the one end socket. (if there are two wires coming out of it hook both wires to the black one.) 6. Take the White wire and hook it to the other end socket. (same procedure for two wires.) 7. Install your lamp or bulb. 8. Turn on your power and the light should light. 9. Turn off power and replace covers. Your light should be fully functional.5. How can I safely replace a light fixture above a stairwell? You can try this type of ladder. It allows for a configuration like this on a staircase:Here is another option that might work as well6. How to properly wire a ceiling light fixture? It can also be a bad switch. The same thing just happened to me. Using black and white the power was on all of the time. I wired it up correctly using the red, but then the light would not come on. All of a sudden it came on by itself. I played with the switch and found that it was intermittent! Replace it with a new 49 cent switch (15 amp) from the junk box in the garage and BINGO - fixed! Thank you, offending switch for your confession!.7. Full Spectrum Light Bulbs old light fixture? There should be an electrical rating sticker on the fixture8. Flourescent light fixture?check incoming voltage and compare with fixture, right ballast, right tubes, connections right? Maybe cheap tubes, defective ballast? Remote possibility: on and off too much?9. I have this weird light fixture I can't unscrew. Help!?Without seeing the light fixture its harder to say, but here are a few tips: Turn the glass to make sure its not locked in that way, some times it will have a notch in it. If that does not work, the hollow tube thats in the middle, I have seen those to wear they are not treaded on the "top end" instead of turning it try to gently push is up and over, it might slide or hook in. If that does not work try pulling down while turning, be careful not to let the globe come crashing down on your head. Check the top and make sure that there are not three screws holding it in there, they will not have a slot for a screw driver, so you will have to use fingers or pliers. Be careful and if your in doubt trip the breaker
Most Commonly Asked Questions About Solar Light
Do you want to know about solar light? Here are some frequently asked questions.1. How long does it take for a new solar light to work? How To Charge Solar Lights2. How to repair a garden solar lightSolar lights use a small photovoltaic panel. When the sun shines on them, electricity is generated, storing power in a small battery bank. When a solar lights fails to light up, there are a couple of reasons for this. It only takes a few minutes to get your lights up and running again. Remove the glass. You may need to unscrew the glass to remove it. Remove the battery cover, if there is one. You may need to unscrew this. Clean the battery ends and terminals. You can remove any rust or corrosion with sandpaper. Remove any bugs and dirt. Test the batteries with a battery tester or a volt meter on a low DC setting. If the batteries are fine, it is probably a faulty photocell. The photocell is a light sensor that controls when the solar lights turn on or off.3. Learn How to Fix a Solar Light With These Simple StepsA good looking solar light can be a great add to your home's backyard or yard. They work for quite a while before they, like all electronic devices, break down. Here's a few tips to making them work again. The solution to any problem lies in its assessment. That is exactly what we need to do in this case too. To know what is wrong with your solar yard light, you need to know what makes a solar light. The casing on the outside protects the equipment on the inside. The glass on top is designed to let in all the sunlight for the photovoltaic cell to soak it in and for the LED to glow effectively in the dark. The photovoltaic cells may be inside the glass or on top of the case, depending on what model you choose. The LED is under the glass case, inside a cylindrical glass designed to refract the light as brightly in all directions. It is connected to the batteries and the light sensor. The batteries in a solar light are generally single AA NiCad batteries. They are rechargeable and pretty good for jobs like these. The sensor is nothing but a simple photoresistor that cuts a circuit as long as sunlight falls on it. When it gets dark, the sensor stops and the circuit between the battery and the LED is complete, lighting it up. Everything is mounted underneath the top cover as a single unit. Now that we know what is in a solar light, we can get to fixing it. There are some visual results that you can use to know exactly what is wrong with the light, things like: The light is placed in a spot where there is not enough sunlight. This will happen after changes in the seasons as the earth revolves. The light turning ON after a few hours of sunlight, during the day. This means that the sensor does not work properly and the light basically runs out of battery after, like an hour into the evening. This means your need to fix/replace the sensor, depending on how bad a state it's in. If the light is not ON during the day and still does not come on in the night, there can be a problem with the sensor, the battery or the LED itself. If the light flickers, there's a problem with the wires or the LED. Probably the simplest thing to do that might solve your problem. It can sometimes happen that dust and dirt will settle on top of the LED, dimming it, or on the sensor, making it malfunction. Another problem with the sensor is that if the transparent coating on it is not top grade, it will slowly turn opaque due to direct exposure to sunlight. Based on the model, there will be screws on the top or bottom of the case. Unscrew all that you find and leave them such that you know which one goes where. Inside the case will be the entire electronic arrangement. The batteries will probably have a casing for themselves that you will need to unscrew. Remove the glass casing on top and clean it with a cleaning fluid or a damp cloth. If there's a lot of dirt on the inside, you can rinse it under a sink. Take out the battery from the battery case and clean out the case and battery. The easiest problem to fix. If the problem was the dirt, the light should be working fine now. If not, check the wires connecting the things together. If it's loose somewhere, get it fixed back on from someone who can solder the wire back on. If there are small screws connecting the wires to the electronics, there may be a chance that the wire came out of the screw. Fit it back again and put the battery back in. If your light was old, chances are the battery is dead. If you have spare battery, use that to see if the light comes on in the dark. You can also use the battery off another solar light, or you can get new batteries. If none of this works, the problem then lies in either the sensor or the LED. The problem here is you wo not really know for sure which one is really to blame. You may replace the sensor only to realize the LEDs blown, or the other way round. There is one fix that you can do with the sensor that may help you decide. One reason for the sensor to not work is because there is dirt on it. Clean it up and see if it works. If there is no dirt, then check the coating on the sensor. Most solar lights come cheap and are made of cheap stuff. What happens is that the thin coating of plastic meant for protecting the sensor, actually shuts it down. This can happen because the coating turns opaque after months of exposure to sunlight. What you can do here is chip it off, replace it with clear plastic wrap or scotch tape. If the light is still not back on yet, this means the sensor is dead. Again you can not really know whether it's the sensor or the LED, so you either replace the sensor or the LED. I would go with the sensor first. If replacing the sensor does not work, the LED is dead and you will have to replace it. The thing with solar lights is, most of them are made cheap and sold cheap, even if it's in an attractive case. But the essence of buying a solar light is to reduce one's carbon footprint, so it would be good to fix the problem rather than buy a new light.
MVD Cracks Down on Fancy Lights - the Hindu
Following public complaints of illegal use of fancy lights and high-beam LED fittings on vehicles, the enforcement squad of the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD), in a series of inspections recently, found 485 instances in Kozhikode city.Squad members said the additional light fittings and alterations were mostly found on new models of motorbikes during their inspections on the national and State highways."We launched the special drive on March 19 noticing confidential complaints on the increase in the number of vehicles fitted with the high-beam lights and their role in causing flash blindness on highways. In the inspection, it was found true," said Regional Transport Officer (Enforcement) P.M. Shabeer. He said the drive would be continued with the support of five squads.₹1.25 lakh collectedWithin the last three weeks alone, the MVD squad collected ₹1.25 lakh as compounding fee from the violators. Most of the cases were tracked during the inspections carried out on the Ramanattukara-Vengalam stretch of the Kozhikode bypass road. The squads also removed the spot lights, customised LED lights and other ornamental light fittings on the vehicles on the spot.In the wake of noticing increasing incidents, the enforcement squad is also planing to secure a Lux Metre to scientifically measure the intensity of the lights and track more cases. As of now, they are mainly tracking vehicles with visibly altered lights and additional LED fittings. Also, the department has plans to increase the frequency of checking against road rule violations with the joining of the newly recruited Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspectors. Thus, the existing number of five squads will be increased to 12 in Kozhikode regional transport office limit alone."The additional lights can directly fall on the eyes of drivers in the opposite direction and instantly cause flash blindness. Many are yet to be aware of the big risk involved in such amateur practices," said Mr. Shabeer.
Best LED High Bay Light
The introduction of LED High BayLEDs have been a popular choice for lighting since the 1990s. However, LEDs are heating up the market with their superior quality and cost-efficient benefits. The introduction of LED high bay lights is now a common sight in many factories, warehouses, and retail outlets. These high bay lights allow companies to save energy while still maintaining enough light to see clearly at work.LED High Bay LightsTips for LED High BayThe best lighting for an LED high bay is a combination of diffusion and edge-lighting.The most common way to light an LED high bay is with a single light source in the center of the ceiling. This approach is not ideal because it does not diffuse the light properly and also has the potential to create shadows on the walls. To solve this problem, you can use two lights - one at either end of the ceiling - that will create a more uniform light distribution. How to use LED High Bay?LEDs are becoming the most popular type of lighting technology in the market due to their unmatched efficiency. An LED high bay is ideal for use in offices, warehouses, retail stores, and other commercial spaces.LED lighting has become a popular option for many commercial applications. In today’s world, one of the biggest drivers of change has been LED lighting technology that can deliver up to 80% greater energy savings compared to conventional lighting. To learn more about how to use LED high bays effectively in your business space or office space, consult with an LED expert who can help you determine which type of fixture will work best for your needs and your budget. The specifications of LED High BayThe specification of LED High Bay is to produce light that has a color temperature between 3000K and 4000K. The color temperature is measured in kelvin which can be converted to degrees Kelvin. The specification of this light is 3000-4000 Kelvin and it uses an RGBW LED cluster with a CRI of 80. The average power consumption of this type of LED High Bay is 2,500W.This article will discuss the specifications for the type of LED High Bay used in some retail stores.Lighting experts consider LEDs as the best option for illumination because they are cheaper than conventional lamps, last longer, consume less energy, and have a lower carbon footprint. The product instructions of LED High BayThe LED high bay is a new source of light that has been gaining popularity in the market. It produces light beams without heat and is energy efficient. The products instructions of LED High Bay are as follows:1. Install the LED high bay at least 3 feet above the ground.2. Connect the power cord to an electrical outlet or extension cord with GFI circuit breaker on it, and then plug into one of the four outlets on the side.3. Unpack only one light per package, then install it by following manufacturer’s instructions and placing it next to an electrical outlet that can support up to 15 amps per circuit (15A).4. In order for both lights to work at once, make sure you connect both powerThe application of LED High BayLED High Bay is a type of lighting that is used in outdoor lighting, meaning it can be seen from a distance. It has some benefits compared to traditional high bays.LED High Bay can be more efficient than the former since it uses less energy than traditional outdoor high bays. It also has a lower cost and comes with other benefits such as hydrophobic coating and enhanced color rendering index.LED High Bay are more popular for outdoor uses because they provide a clear light source that does not have any shadows or glare that the former types of lights may produce
Night Light in the Shape of a Lamp?
Who sings bad boys ? used to be in real life amercian cop show?1. Which of these items do you think I really need?*** Big Stuff *** Graco Pack 'N Play with Posture Plus Changer-You do not need this, but it is nice to have. I did not start using mine until he could sit on his own though, so unless you will need it for a portable crib, I would wait on this one until around 6 months. Graco Snugride Infant Car Seat-You need this one or you can not even leave the hospital. :-) Jogger Stroller-Definitely not necessary unless you are a track and field kind of gal. I can jog at a fairly normal pace with my regular stroller. (You may want to change the infant car seat to a travel system and kill two birds with one stone.) High Chair-You do not need this for 4-6 months, but if you want to be prepared ahead of time it is something you will definitely use later. Bouncer-I never had one....they grow so fast it is not worth it to me. I got a swing that converts to a rocking chair for a toddler and that worked well for me. Crib-Pretty much a must-have. Changing Table-I have heard both opinions on this one. I use mine virtually every time I change my son. I love it and could not live without it. Other people find it easier to just do a quick change wherever they are at the moment. Rocker/Glider-This would be really nice for those middle of the night feedings and to calm a fussy baby. I was really glad my family got me one. Mattress-Goes with the crib-definitely important. *** Nursery *** Bedding Set-So far I have not used anything but the crib sheet. It's cute and might look nice, but is not necessary. Extra Fitted Sheet-I think having at least two sheets is important. That way if there is a leak on one, you have a spare to change it to. Diaper Stacker-Definitely not necessary-mine just stay in the package on the changing table-but I have always thought it would be handy to have. Hamper-You can use anything you already have to throw dirty clothes into, or even make a pile in the corner on the floor, but a hamper would be nice to have. Moisture-proof mattress pads-I bought one, but have not needed it. I may just be lucky though-my son has never leaked at night. Night Light-This would be nice to have so you can see to get the baby and feed him/her without turning on extra lights. That way they will hopefully get the concept that night time is for sleeping. Changing Pad & Accessories-A pad is definitely good to have, but about as necessary as the table I think. I know I am glad to have mine. *** Feeding *** Boppy with Cover-This is a must-have in my book. It is perfect for breastfeeding, then as soon as he started trying to sit on his own it became a cushion for his falls. It is also great for tummy time. Drying Rack-Definitely not necesary, but mine has sure been handy because I like to keep his stuff seperate. It feels cleaner somehow. 5 Pack Bibs-Perfect for when the drooling starts, but not necessary right away. Steam Sterilizer-Not really necessary, in my opinion. I boil the binkies and bottle nipples once a week or so, and that's about it. This might be more important though if your baby has a compromised immune system or is born early. Dishwasher Basket-LOVE IT- all those tiny plastic spoons, bottle rings, and binkies would fly all over the dishwasher without it. Burp Cloths-Definitely a must-have. You could always use old towels or T-shirts though. *** Bath Time *** Towel 3 Pack-you do not NEED baby towels, but they are much softer and a better size. I would say you should get these. Wash Cloths - 8 pack-See towels. Infant Tub-The sink works just as well and saves your back, but I did use my infant tub as well. I guess it depends on what you would prefer. My son outgrew the infant tub around 5 months old. Johnson's Bathtime Essentials Gift Set-I think I received this exact thing and it is great. Johnson's lotion and baby wash are gentle and smell nice. You definitely need some kind of baby soap and lotion, and these are a good choice. Boudreaux's Butt Paste - 4oz.- I never used this brand, but any diaper cream is important. Baby Kisses Lip Balm- Lip balm for a baby? hmm.... I am inclined to say this one is unnecessary. Diapers & Wipes- Yep! There will be lots of poop! *** Clothing & Blankets *** (how many? which type?) I would say you need some light blankets like receiving blankets (maybe 3 or 4) as well as a couple of heavier blankets for colder days. As for clothes.... Onesies are awesome. I loved the footed jammies because I was so tired of chasing around that stray sock all day. I would get mostly 0-3 months and 3-6 months sizes. A couple of newborn sizes would also be good, but there is no telling how big the baby will be. *** Health *** Humidifier-I have never needed one, but if your little one got a stuffy nose I have heard these are nice to have. Grooming Set-You need at least the nail clippers. Ear Thermometer- I think rectal thermometers are more accurate on a young baby. But any thermometer is a must-have. *** Ex2. Turtle Tank Night Light, Timer, Heat Rock Temperature?1. 80 degree water will not feel warm because your body temp is around 98.6. If you want to shine a red heat light on a rock, that is fine. He may enjoy it. Many of my reptiles enjoy basking. 2. There are timers that turn everything on and off and you never have to worry about them. Go to a hardware store and ask them to help you find one. They are not necessary, but helpful if you tend to forget or have an odd schedule. 3.Not sure about the thermometer. The only kind of heat rock you should use is the above mentioned light shining on a rock.
How Does Light From Quasars and Galaxies 13 Billion Light Years Away Reach Us on Earth?
On Earth, light is scattered and absorbed by the air - the air molecules plus moisture, dust, and other particulates. In space, there is no air and very little other particulates outside the various nebula. Plus quasars are trillions of times more powerful than any flashlight.1. Why is there a light in the refrigerator...?Some Freezers takes up less space so it's easier to find your food, In a fridge it's vast and you need light sometimes. Ever used common sense?2. Light and color vocab???? Help?additive primary colors - primary color elements that make up white light. (Red, Blue, Green) complementary colors - pairs of colors of opposite hue (ex. red and green) electromagnetic wave - a wave that can travel through space or matter and consists of changing electric and magnetic fields electromagnetic spectrum - the range of wavelengths or frequencies over which electromagnetic radiation extends. Apaque - ? Did you mean opaque ? if so, not transparent or translucent. Impenetrable to light. subtractive primary colors - substances that reflect light of one of the wavelengths and absorb other wavelengths may be mixed to produce all colors. transparent - having the property of transmitting light without scattering so that bodies lying beyond can be seen clearly.3. If you are in your car traveling the speed of light and turned on your headlights would they work?of course they would work the speed of light has nothing to do with them turning on as long as the car electric system is working normal and there is power running to them4. Why are the energy efficent light bulbs a swirly shape? They have to have a long tube to make a lot of light. The spiral shape fits a long tube in the space of a regular round bulb. Regular fluorescent lights are long tubes. You see them all the time in stores, offices, schools, everywhere. I have them in my kitchen. The 4 foot long tube lights. Those are fluorescent and efficient, but not compact (small). CFL stands for COMPACT Fluorescent Light.5. how much can changing light enter the eye shap what you see? [closed]I am interpreting your question to be: "How much can changing the light entering the eye change the shape of/how objects are seen? Would manipulating that light just stop you from seeing certain things?"Manipulating the light entering the eye is the exact premise of a virtual retinal display (VRD):From Wikipedia - A VRD is a display technology that draws a raster display (like a television) directly onto the retina of the eye. The user sees what appears to be a conventional display floating in space in front of them. Google Glass and other technologies (virtual reality headsets, heads-up displays) operate through relatively similar projection mechanisms. Light defines everything the eye sees (outside of hallucinations, and even those can be induced by flickering light). Also, the way your brain processes visual information (photons received by your eyes) can be "tricked," which is discussed in this BBC article. Finally, your brain's ability to process visual information can be altered by external forces (e. g. drugs, motion, or even strong magnetic fields)6. If you had a stick, one light year long, would it's kinetic energy travel faster than the speed of light?it would have to be impossibly rigid, otherwise you would simply be causing a "compression" of the electrostatic forces between the various molecules and even the atoms... such a compression, while infinite in its ability to traverse a solid object, would propagate at a rate slower than the speed of light.... even a monomolecular filament a light year long would not be rigid enough. .. you would need a single atom with a vibrational frequency of 1 light year, that is, an atom stretched so far that it vibrates at a 1 light year cycle.... impossible for so many many reasons7. mercury is very dangerous to the body - so how can the light from mercury light-bulbs be healthy?Light that goes through a lethal substance. Typically is not any more lethal than simple light. It's not like the electricity could pick up particles of mercury and phase it through the glass and into your body. A mercury lightbulb is merely a manipulation of fire cause through chemical-electric means

LED Lighting Under VEU (Victorian Energy Upgrade Program)
Your home is your castle. We take that to heart, which is why we strive hard to make your castle look its best through a vast selection of energy-efficient LED lighting products. We are expert LED light installers in Victoria. We propose LED lighting. Why? Because LED residential lighting saves over 80 percent of electric energy than traditional lights. WHAT ARE LED LIGHTS?LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. Its a semiconductor that converts electrical current into light with high efficiency. When electric current passes through the built-in microchip, it illuminates the tiny light sources called LEDs that emit light in the visible spectrum. Unlike old light bulbs (incandescent and CFLs), LED lights dont require a filament or fluorescent gas to produce light. Hence, they dont produce any heat when lit thanks to the built-in heat sink that absorbs radiated heat to keep energy consumption and heat dissipation low. This mean about 80% less energy is used to produce greater brightness per watt while emitting almost negligible heat. HOW LEDS ARE DIFFERENT FROM INCANDESCENT BULBS AND CFLS?LED bulbs are very different from incandescent bulbs and CFLs. Key differences include the following:Light Source: LEDs are of grain size, and a mix of red, green, and blue LEDs is typically used to make white light.Direction: LEDs emit light in a specific direction, reducing the need for reflectors that can trap light. This feature makes LEDs more efficient. Heat: LEDs emit very little heat, whereas incandescents release about 90% of their energy as heat and CFLs release about 80% of energy as heat.Lumen & Wattage: LED bulbs require much less wattage than CFL or Incandescent light bulbs, which is why LEDs are more energy-efficient and longer lasting than their competitors. How to understand this table look at the lumens (brightness) in the far left column, then compare how many watts of power each light bulb type requires to produce that level of brightness. The lower the wattage needed, the better.Lumens (Brightness)Watts (LED)Watts (CFL)Watts (Incandescent)40050067W812W40W650850710W1318W60W100014001213W1822W75W145017001420W2330W100W27002528W3055W150WWHAT IS ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING?Energy efficiency refers to the amount of energy required to provide appropriate light. In conventional bulbs like incandescent, halogen and fluorescent bulbs, most of the electricity is wasted in terms of heat since ballast requires high voltage at the time of starting, resulting in more power consumption. In other words, energy efficient lighting means achieving more illumination from less power by replacing high power consumption products like incandescent, halogen and CFL bulbs with highly energy-efficient LED products. As discussed, LED bulbs are better than conventional light bulbs in several ways. First and foremost being reduced energy usage because LED lighting requires far less power to run than traditional lights. Which is why the Victorian government has created a rebate program called the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) to incentivise greener industry initiatives to reduce overall environmental impact. The program was formerly known as the Victorian Energy Efficiency Target (VEET) scheme.WHAT IS VEU PROGRAM?The VEU program is a Victorian Government initiative to promote and encourage energy efficient technology. The rebate program covers both residential as well as commercial setups and provides financial incentives for switching to more energy efficient products and practices. The program is one of the most popular energy-saving initiatives by the Australian government to make energy efficiency improvements more affordable to Victorian households and businesses. It is administered in accordance with the VEU Regulations 2008 by the Essential Services Commission. Since the date of commencement, the VEU program aims to:Make energy efficiency improvements more affordable for business and householdsContribute to the reduction of greenhouse gasesEncourage investment, employment, and technology development in industries supplying energy efficiency products and services across VictoriaRead Full @ RELATED QUESTION Were can I get quality outdoor LED lighting for my landscape project? Toshiba's Tiny Tablet Pits Itself Against Bigger Models and Comes Up Trumps
THIS seven-inch tablet is going to appeal to users who want an e-reader, but are prepared to pay extra to get the functionality of a tablet computer. The AT1S0 has the functionality of Toshiba's larger offering with less storage and smaller ports. It offers 8GB of storage and an LED backlit multi-touch display with 1280 by 800 resolution. It is powered by the NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and runs Android 3.2 operating system. It also has NVIDIA GeForce graphics capability, which means that video is crisp and clear. It comes with two HD cameras with the 5MP rear-facing for stills and video and 2MP front-facer for video calls, which gives it higher video specs than the Galaxy TAB 10.1.Connectivity is provided through micro HDMI and mini USB ports plus a micro SD card slot the full-sized versions being sacrificed with the smaller form factor. It has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in and is DLNA certified so it can be hooked up to the home wireless network for entertainment options but doesn't have 3G capability. It is too big to take on a jog but it comes with a gyroscope, accelerometer, ambient light sensor, GPS and e-compass, which would make it suitable as an in-vehicle GPS or on camping and hiking trips. With 1GB of DDR memory it is reasonably responsive and it has up to eight hours of battery life. However, at 399gm it weighs 40 per cent less than the Motorola Zoom.Being loaded with apps from Android Market, it is able to be up and running within minutes. Apart from document, spreadsheet and presentation apps it has has a calculator, browser, camera, calendar, clock, contacts, gallery, and a file manager plus the Google apps of search, Latitude, Maps and Gmail.Optional accessories include a tablet dock that also charges the device at $59.95, a touch screen pen $19.95 and a wireless keyboard at $79.95.If you are looking for a device the size of an e-reader with the functionality of a tablet, then the AT1S0 was made for you. However, it doesn't have the battery life or e-ink screen of an e-reader and being smaller than most tablets sacrifices full-sized ports and slots.
You'd Never Expect to Find This Opulent Mansion next to a Gas Station in Detroit
You'd never expect to find this between a gas station and a parking garage on a busy Detroit street. But sure enough, the historic (and humongous) Hecker-Smiley mansion looms on a block of Woodward Avenue -- and it's for sale for less than the price of a decent two-bedroom apartment in Manhattan.Flickr photo by gab482.Looking at the mansion, now on the market for $2.8 million, you can see why Detroit was once called the Paris of the West. Two American presidents, and one vice president, have visited the former residence of Col. Frank Hecker. Built by architect Louis Kamper and finished in 1892, the 21,000-square-foot French Renaissance-styled home was modeled after the 16th century Chteau de Chenonceau in the Loire Valley as an ode to the city's French roots. It was the first residence in Michigan to have electricity, and some of its original electric light fixtures still remain.Hecker, a railroad tycoon, lived there until his death in 1927; the house was then used as a boarding house before Paul Smiley purchased in 1945 for his company, Smiley Brothers Music Co. In the 1990s, current owners Charfoos & Christensen moved in and completed an extensive renovation, for which they were given a Historic Rehabilitation Excellence Award from the National Park Service in 1994, according to the Michigan Bar Journal. The home has since been used as the law firm's offices. The home has so many rooms that Doug Peters, attorney and expert on the home's history, had difficulty counting. Historic Detroit estimates there are 49 rooms on the mansion's three floors, which wouldn't include the finished basement or two-story, 6,000-square-foot carriage house. The second building holds a mock courtroom that used to be a stable; oats for the horses sometimes still shake loose and collect in a light fixture. One walk around the mansion isn't enough to take in all its details and history, from the 13 fireplaces to the large paintings of Detroit scenes by Hungarian artist Balazs Szabo. You couldn't tell that Vice President Joe Biden has visited the home recently and, much less recently, former Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and William McKinley stayed there. There are countless nooks and crannies, and the house's turrets create charming round spaces. Many rooms are lined with ornate paneling and parquet floors. While renovating, the lawyers stumbled on one of the best surprises: a secret passageway that ran around the mansion's perimeter. It's former use is still unclear.Levi Smith, a broker with Southfield, Mich. real estate firm Principal Associates, said the home has been on the market for several years and the price has come down from over $3 million. They imagine the building being right for a nonprofit, a professional organization, small museum, club or consulate: it currently serves as the Royal Danish Consulate of Detroit. But it could also potentially be used as a residential home, he said. So if you'd like to live like a railroad tycoon for less than the cost of a 2-bedroom New York condo, it's worth a look at the photos below -- and be sure to send us an invitation to the ball. Most importantly, it needs to go to someone who will care for the historic home. Who knew the Motor City had so many opulent mansions?Hat tip: Curbed Detroit.
